Language Adventure is a university final year project that I did together with 5 other students. This is an application proposed by our client - UQ Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education for creating a better and smooth transition for international to get themselves familiarised with the campus while making new friends.
My main responsibilities for this project were as follows:
Wireframe Design
User interface Colour scheme and Design
Design Iterations
Conversation holder between our client and also our target user groups
Team leader of the project
Wireframe
After heated discussion within the team, we drew some wireframe ideas together and i was responsible to convert the hand-drawn wireframes into digital prototype just so we can show our client the idea of the application.
This is one of the first time i did wireframe and converting them into digital prototype. Looking back at this project, i realised that there are so many things i should have done differently or avoided. But this is all part of the learning process.
The application prototype at this stage is a 'almost colour-less' iOS mobile device application.
The focus of this prototype is the design of the use flow of our intention to direct users. This was the biggest part of our discussion within our team and a decision has to be made on this before further continuation.
User Interface Design
I was the design lead in the team for this project and there are many design choices that we had to make together and/or justify to our client. Throughout the process, there are many prototypes, the followings are the two version of prototype that marked the most important milestones in the project. The first one is our wireframe when it was used for user testing and the later one being the first coloured draft of the application.
Interactive Prototype
Design Iterations
There have been about 5 iterations for this specific project due to the length of the semester (fortnightly sprints). This was a very good experience to actually have our hands on experience with all the theories we learnt and applied them into a real-life project with a real client.
The most difficult challenge in this project is actually to help our client realise what they really need and want out of the application, and work with target user group to understand their needs and how it matches the client requirements.
The communication is what made everything possible!
The followings are the final design of the application.
Being the Team Lead
What i learnt from this project is far more than the user interface design and user experience analysis. It is the communication skill, the team work skill, time management and interpersonal skill that really helped me in the long run.
Being the team lead in this project means i need to make sure we get the timeframe right for what we are to deliver and making sure teammates are sticking to it. I was very lucky to be blessed with teammates who are hardworking and amazing but it was the communication and interpersonal skill that held everyone together and delivered the project amazingly as a team.
